Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of receiving and providing financial support from or to their offsprings has on older parents¡¦ happiness, on the basis of the theoretical perspectives of filial piety and altruism. The sample consisted of 2,527 individuals older than 65 who are living separately from their offsprings from the 4th wave(2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA). Considering the situational context of receiving and providing financial support from or to their offspring, we distinguished three independent variables ``regularly provide¤ý receive``, ``irregularly provide¤ýreceive``, and ``never provide¤ýreceive``. We applied the multi-variate regression model to 1) the whole sample(N=2,527), 2) the low-income group(N=1,462), and 3) the high-income group(N=358) to test whether the effects differ by parent¡¦s income levels. From the whole sample and the low-income group, we found that receiving financial support regularly or irregularly from their offsprings heightened the level of parents`` happiness while providing financial support irregularly to their offsprings heightened the feeling of happiness in the high-income group(p=.080). In the low-income group, providing financial support to their offsprings lessened the level of parent``s happiness. Receiving no financial support from their offspring lessened the level of parents¡¦ happiness in the whole sample and the high-income group. Lastly, we suggest practical implication of this study.
